Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Home Watch service?

Home Watch is known by many names: house watch, house check, home concierge, home check, caretaker, absentee home service, property watch, and so on. Regardless of the name, a Home Watch service performs scheduled inspections of “vacant” properties while the owner is away. A Home Watch service is designed to give you peace of mind while you are away from your home. Your home is inspected by professionals looking for any potential problems. If a situation does arise, you will be notified so the problem can be dealt with in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

Why do I need someone to check my house while I am away?

So many things can happen to your home in your absence: break-ins, water leaks, electrical problems, insects, mold, and storms, to name a few. If you have not had your home checked on a regular basis, and say a pipe has broken causing extensive water damage, your insurance company may not pay for the very costly repairs.

What is the difference between home watching and home sitting?

A home watch service consists of inspecting the interior and exterior of your home in your absence. At Home Watch Service Plus® our primary emphasis is assuring your home is secure and you are not having issues with neighbors, squatters, vandalism, water leaks, animal intrusion, bugs/insects, weather/wind damage, plumbing, electrical, air conditioning/heating, mold/mildew and other concerns. We do this by making visits to your property weekly, bi-weekly or by contracted dates with our professional team. We do not provide house sitting services where people contract to live in your home while you are absent. Also, we are personal property management services but we are not involved in renting or leasing properties.

What if I have a situation at my home?

The Home Watch professionals’ experience and judgment will allow them to handle any situation with a calculated response. If the situation is an emergency, it will be handled in the fastest, safest, and most cost-effective way. In a non-emergency situation, you will be contacted to discuss and implement a course of action.

Is a Home Watch service the same as a security service?

Not really. However, having a visible presence in your empty home may act as a crime deterrent.

How often does my home need to be checked when I am away?

Each insurance company has their own policy requirements so it is best to check with your home insurance company, but most require that you have your home checked every 3 to 4 days.

What would happen if I didn’t have someone check my home and my water pipes sprung a leak or something similar to that?

Many people have learned the hard way when it comes to being away with no one watching their home. Insurance companies have voided the home owners claims if there is no proof that their house was being checked. Insurance adjusters can tell how long the damage has gone unchecked.

What are the types of things that need to be checked while I am away?

Ensure all doors and windows are secure and locked, check all areas where water pipes may leak, check electrical panel for tripped breakers, to name just a few. We do a room by room inspection checking all appliances i.e. hot water tank to ensure your home remains problem free. We do a perimeter check and look for any signs of problems. The idea is that your home will be looked in on and maintained as if being lived in while you are away.

Can I request a number of different services?

Yes, a custom plan will be drawn up for your unique needs.

Can you look after my cat while I am away?

Yes we believe pets do best in their home environment (as opposed to a kennel). We offer pet checking services and can customize a plan that is just right for you and your pet.

Are you able to pick me up from the airport if I’m coming back into town?

Yes, airport services can be arranged as an add-on to a home check package from most areas of service.

What if I am doing home renovations or am expecting deliveries and cannot be at the house, would your company be there to receive these goods and services?

Yes, we can arrange to be at your house to supervise and receive goods and services. Most insurance companies require someone check on your home during renovations to validate your home insurance.
